Hi everyone,

To build a detached double garage - 5m X 6m long - not sure which way to run the ridge at the moment, what wall construction would you use?

half brick thick with piers? half brick with inner block leaf and wall ties? double brick wall also with wall ties?

your ideas/experiences will be much appreciated...

In accordance with Cl 2C6 Approved doc A as basic starter for 10 (190 thick walls) and develop it to what spec you want the garage to be built to

So, is 2 side-by-side 100mm brick leafs ok as i cannot find 190mm thick bricks? Or would you suggest a 215mm thick wall with a stretcher bond every three or four courses?

I/2 brick with piers centrally and at any opening for a single storey, regardless of how big it is.

Three of the last four garages we built had insulated cavity walls, i.e. brick outer 50mm cav' and block inner. The other had solid 215mm walls i.e. brick outer and block inner.
None were built as single skin.....

Unfortunately there is nothing in Doc A that gives deemed to satisfy guidance for single skin and pier construction and I doubt whether BC will accept "this is the pier spacing we always do" with out structural verification ( unless maybe with an old school BC officer or the garage is being built outside any building regs requirement?) but if you can give the OP some guidance on spacing etc I am sure he will be grateful.

Will they except "here's the locations of hundreds of thousands of garages that have not managed to fall down for the past 80 years, and the sites of some new builds being built now"?

"And here are the wind loading/stability calcs that go with them to prove their structural integrity cos I cannot find any deemed to satisfy paras in Doc A "?
