Detached gararage construction zero rated for VAT or not?

Hi

I'm building a detached garage for my own personal use at the rear of the house. Can anyone tell me if it is still possible to reclaim the VAT on materials used from Customs & Excise?

Don't think it is, as it's part of that property, regardless of being detached.

Go to www.hmcr.gov.uk and look for Notice 700.

Many years ago, when I was VAT registered, the construction of a garage was zero rated if it was detached from the main property. Having followed your link it seems that longer applies.

That was probably back in those halcyon days when alterations didn't attract VAT, like they do now .
