Detecting pipework behind tiling

Is there an easy way to detect pipes behind a tiled wall in a bathroom?
I need to install a shower rail and there has not been one there before

Not really, but it's relatively unusual to find a pipe in a position where a shower rail's fixings would go.

The professional is at an advantage here; he can usually work out where any pipework is likely to be and if disaster strikes he can (a) deal with the leak quickly, (b) carries liability insurance and (c) will not get a daily earful from the lady of the house for weeks afterwards.
