Hi There,
First post yay!

I bought two Crackle 5 Light Fitting in Chrome for my two bedrooms (one each for each bedroom) from homebase. See http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wc...ay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=167058

Problem is that both the dimmers blew out right after fitting them! The lights come with 5 x G4 halogen bulb (rated at 20w each I think) and I thought that I'd be safe with a 400 dimmer?

The switches are LAP 1-Gang 2-Way Push Dimmer Switch 400W/400VA from Screwfix. See http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-1-gang-2-way-push-dimmer-switch-400w-400va-polished-chrome/77563.

Am I doing something wrong or are the switches dud in the first place?

Cheers.

Is there a transformer in the centre of the light fitting. If there is then the dimmer needs to be one that is suitable for the transformer. Using the wrong type of dimmer with a transformer can end in disaster.

Firstly how did you wire the fittings?

Secondly, you are not trying to fit two normal two way dimmer switches to a two way lighting arrangement are you?

My guess at the moment is that the OP has wired the switch across L&N and blown the dimmers

Sounds like you've made the classic mistake of wiring the light switch accross the live & neautral causing a dead short. How did you wire the lights up when you replaced them, did you just wire all reds/browns to live and all blacks/blues to neautral ?
