Hi we are changing this light in the pics below with a light from homebase http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wc...ay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=887424

The trouble is you get a connector block with just the 3 wires ,earth neutral and live ..the light in the pic has more wires as one will be a switched live the light can be turned off and on via two separate light switches on opposite walls. Can anyone identify the best solution to connect up this light :)

Thanks

Looking at you picture you have neutrals looped in at light fitting. It is hard to tell if the connection block in the picture is hiding anything that could be connected to the central terminal of the ceiling rose loop.
Could we have some clarity on this please?
If there art no cables in central loop,
Connect all the blacks to the neutral side of your new fitting, you don't need the connection block with the blue cable in it if the black cables are long enough to reach the new light fittings neutral terminal, if not long enough use the link. The earth green/yellow to earth terminal and the red to the live side of fitting. The two brown cables look like they belong to the old light, so wont be used. Not sure why they are both brown though?

The light fitting "base" looks like it may be bigger than the ceiling rose so you might be able to use a maintenance free juntion box above it in the ceiling void.

When changing it if it hasn't got anything to hold it up near the ceiling in use a bit of copper cable bent to hold it up while you're wiring :?:

yeah not sure why the old fitting has 2 browns as well ..this through me a little.

As my previous post your neutrals(black core cables) are looped in at the ceiling, so connect all these together in the neutral block for the new light. The Phase (red) will go to the live side of new fitting and the earth to earth terminal.

Likely the person that fitted it, damaged blue flex and replaced with brown.
But does look suspiciously like solid cores rather than stranded.
What type of fitting is there now?
This horrible thing lol
Like i say not been in this house long and wanted to get rid of the fittings ,i hate those energy saving bulbs !!

So just to clarify that the wire i have circled and arrowed is also a neutral ?? as i cannot see any black cable under the the grey outer cable because of the way it was spliced..

Thanks again.

Yes that should be a neutral, if you remove a little of the grey sheathing, there should be a black core of insulation there.
It's parked in neutral at the moment so that is what it should be.

Cheers will sort it and get it up.Thanks once again it's appreciated.

,i hate those energy saving bulbs !!
Why?

When I moved into this house, every light had 3 or 4 halogen bulbs in it. I ripped them all out and fitted low energy pendants and now have super-low-energy LED downlights in the kitchen. Even the loft, under stairs and back garden are lit with low energy lights.

You can get very convincing-looking energy saving lamps, and most of my fittings hide the lamp anyway.

In my opinion, nobody should be fitting filament lamps any more, except for specialist applications such as theatres (but even here LEDs are becoming a more realistic proposition).

,i hate those energy saving bulbs !!
Why?
Because they are too expensive.

If we are not being ripped off and they actually cost that much to produce then it would appear that it cannot be that energy efficient to produce them.

An ordinary lamp used to be available for 20p. Now a lamp to fit the bayonet or ES fitting costs at least ten (or twenty) times as much.
New fittings? More unnecessary production and expense.
