dimmer switchs & fittings

hi
can any light fitting/bulb be made dimmable just by adding a dimmable switch to the circuit or are there only certain types of fitting/bulbs that can be used in a dimmable circuit

It is usually possible to replace a normal light switch with a dimmer switch yes, generally only filament lamps are suitable for use with a normal dimmer switches however some of the Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) manufacturers are starting to bring out versions which will work with normal dimmer switches (try googling "dimmerable energy saving").
