Hi We have a 9 inch concrete block wall that has developed vertical a crack. the wall supports a patio and is not connected to the house. I was planning to fix my own version of resin anchors by core drilling holes and inserting M12 (or bigger) stainless steel threaded bar bonded with resin. Can anybody please suggest a suitable resin? the holes will need to be approx 600-700mm deep. thanks in advance

That's lateral movement and the bed reinforcing that you propose is for vertical movement.

It looks like there are already some metal straps on there, are they not working?

Thanks woody. see what you mean- I meant the crack itself is vertical. see enc jpg. this is what I meant re drilling . the straps were put on when the wall was built and havnt worked

So do you intend to just drill a metre long hole and glue a chunk of metal in there?

Or also cross drill so the inner end of the studding slips through a chunk of steel and nuts go on each end?
Sort of a tie rod?

that was my plan ( resin bond / threaded bar) but Im no expert. cross drilling sounds possible - thanks

Never used the ground anchor system myself, only ever built buttress walls or total rebuild for retaining walls.

thanks all- I may have misled you- I intend to fix the bars through the blockwork to tie the crack - not into the bed itself - its worth a try as it wont cost much. any thoughts on resin?? cheers

dont think you would get resin too the end of that hole and if you did good luck getting the bar in you would be better off strapping it

It does not matter, if it's in the bed or the brick, but you need to be clear about what type of reinforcement you are proposing.

Just gluing a rod in horizontally is not the correct repair for horizontal movement.

If you look at that post by Stuart, it shows bars being set into horizontal slots, but also some plates on the wall which are fixed to a rod set in the wall - this is the repair for horizontal movement. And its specialist so that you don't really want to be guessing what type of resin to use, along with type of rod and diameter of the core.

To get the resin to the bottom of the hole, use an applicator (provided in the kit, I think, similar to a pointing gun) but with a length of flexible tube fixed to the outlet which is inserted fully into the hole and as you squeeze the resin, the tube may push itself out, against the resin. Otherwise slowly withdraw the tube as you squeeze in the resin.
