Hi

I have a 2.2m gap going into my gardens side entrance.
I want to put an aluminium gate accross it supported by two brick posts.

I had a concrete base put down for my patio and left a an area at the very top for my
brick posts to sit on.

One side would by 900m wide and 2200mm high - the the gate which is 900mm x 2000mm - then the narrower side which 400mm wide and 2200mm high.

The 900mm brick post can tie in to my garage but the 400mm side would be freestanding. Or in turn I could do it the other way round and make the wide brick post freestanding.

My question is can I do the above without windposts?

A 400 wide brick pier has very little lateral strength on its own. It would be highly vulnerable to cracking somewhere near the base and would then be a significant hazard. My advice would be to epoxy one or two threaded bars into the base, build the pier around and a couple of courses from the top add a plate and nut/s to hold the whole lot down.
