Do I need an electrician to replace a hob?

You can't see what's going on with closed door grilling. I actually bought a standalone wall mounted electric grill because I like to see what's going on....
The fan and rear element runs and the grill turns on so it is cooking from both sides, so only need to turn food once, works well with bacon.

I think the selector on our oven has 12 options, there are elements at side, top and rear so it is a bit like the old Rayburn oven where you could change the damper setting to control how the oven heated, the problem is cook books.

Mrs Beaton would have had the damper setting, however it seems it been rewritten, as it would not have had Gas Mk setting as gas ovens did not exist when she wrote it. It seems the Gas Mk settings have replaced the damper settings, so only the cook book which comes with oven is much good.

I do realise there are so built in steam ovens now which clearly do more than my stand alone, but the 13 amp limit UK, or 16 amp limit Europe means the use of two sets of elements at the same time can't be done with the current limits, only with a stand alone with 32 amp can we have these options.

Why anyone would put a built in oven under the hob, I have never worked out
Force of habit, stubbornness, not liking change! My parents have had this setup for as long as I can remember (at least 40 years). Now they are getting old, I told them they should get an eye level oven so Mum doesn't have to bend down. They both said they were fine with the oven being on the floor. Luckily they have recently moved house and the new setup is eye-level double oven, with a separate induction hob.

Yes indeed - the old traditional cookers with an eye-level grill was great for that, if you burnt toast or bacon it was your own dafter fault like climbing a tree and falling out of it and break yer leg that was your own daft fault too.
