Do I need this upgraded first??

maybe you still have time to go out and buy one, plus an enclosure, plus a metre each of 25mm tails.

Get a metre of 16mm G&Y and an earth block too, or they may reconnect your old earh wire and seal the terminal so you can't change it later.

Thanks John,

what would you recommend for the isolator, do screwfix sell one? As I will have to go from work , before they arrive at 6.
Or Can I get all of the above from TLC?

Thanks

Amazed at EDF contractors coming at 6 - unless its 6am - they normally start then and finish just after midday. As policy EDF dont fit isolators but the jointers will normally fit one if you supply all the bits including a cuppa and a bacon sarnie.

Break out the best biscuits and tea and ask the fellla's when they come if they happen to have an isolator

They may not but always worth the ask.

P.S Fox's classics are my favorite

edit: well that advice was too late it's 6.15 now

Wish we could get away with just biccies and tea; EDF contractors seem to need a full cooked English before they will even "drop" a few seals on their way out. Lets us know how you got on.

Right, well they turned up at 6pm. :)

I did as you guys suggested and fitted an isolator on the board with meter tails fitted, also fitted a earth block and supplied some 16mm GandY.

Cups of tea offered and biscuits. :)

All finished by 8pm, some of the nebiours were not to happy to miss Hollyoaks...as they pulled the blue phase at the substation...

Were great guys and as the isolator was there, fitted to it.

Photos below.

One question, they have just used an earth strap of the main earth,is this usual?

Thanks for all the help and advice, this has help a great deal and I am guessing will save a lot of hassle in the future.

Cheers Guys.

The earth clamp alone is not ideal, and personally I would have been unimpressed that they'd cut off the soldered earth! If they weren't willing to solder a new earth on, I'd have opted to have both earths connected.

Still, at least you have a nice new cut-out :)

edit: Out of interest, how did they get the old one off? It looked to have been completely potted in, and it appears the incomer wasn't cut based on it's position on the board.

Why did they need to pull the blue phase and interrupt the neighbour's supply?

With a hammer!! Which i guess answers Kai's question as to why they cut the power in the street..

I've never seen EDF contractors cut off any power - just knock out the old pitch filled head(s) with a club hammer and affix the new head. Earth connection does look very DIY.
