DO I REQUIRE A LINTEL ?????

I HAVE REMOVED MY DOOR FRAME PARTIALLY, AT THE TOP THE IS A WOODEN BRACE ABOVE THAT IS A COURSE OF BRICKS NO CONCRETE LINTEL.... IF I REMOVE THE WOODEN BRACE WHAT EFFECT WILL THIS HAVE AS I NEED TO REMOVE IT TO FIT THE NEW DOOR FRAME???
