Looking at a loft conversion in a 50/60s bungalow - the joists which would make up the floor are only 4" thick. Is this sufficient (doesn't feel right) and can we jsut screw a 2" piece onto each to strengthen?
Then at least we would have space to put insulation - we are thinking of replacing the 75mm fibreglass with 50mm celotex; are we right in thinking it would have the same thermal property?

Oh dear. I doubt sticking some 2" timbers on top of your 4" timbers will get you close to the kind of structure usually required for loft conversions. 50mm Celotex is not even half of what you'll need and that goes at rafter level not floor level. I think you may need a designer!
