Does bathroom extractor connect to light fitting?

I could look .... probably daft question ... but do extractor fans spur off bathroom light fittings for power? Is that how they work?

Most of the time they run off the same circuit as the lighting circuit. Some have permanent live for a Timer to run on or a Humidity Sensor.

Have just built an extra loo using a Saniflo system under the stairs, the light is operated by a pull switch. How can I use this to connect to an extractor fan and as I want it timed I need a switched live. A circuit would be helpful.
