Does honda insight work even if the batteries are knackered?

I see a few for sale with knackered batteries. I'm just wondering if they still work as a petrol car even without the batteries working?

I think youll have a problem there as the motor battery is used to charge up the 12v utilities battery so unless you could install an alternator you wouldn't get too far.....the car would work until then though.
I'll wait for greater knowledge to come in on this one!
