So far...

We took on a bit of a wreck of a house (400ish years old, no maintenance done for at least 10 years) and have been getting on with it (all diy) since September.

So far problems have included:
a 9.5KW shower running from a 6mm2 cable (the only change in the bathroom since the 60's)
Damp, Damp, Damp. And then the roof leaked.
Rotting floor boards downstairs.
No real kitchen (chipboard and potting benches, anyone?)
Missing windowpanes in sash windows.
Other windows that refuse point blank to close.
Non functioning radiators (upstairs)
Leaking Rayburn (oil conversion. Provides  heating to most of downstairs)
Unswept chimneys (4 years+)
Unserviced boiler (5 years)
Bright orange 70's wallpaper in the stairwell
and generally 'interesting' paintwork throughout

So we got on with it...
Got the Kids' bedrooms usable
got rid of the most offensive paint.
got the roof fixed
Boiler serviced,
one fireplace usable.
stopped oil supply to the Rayburn
replaced missing window panes,
removed shower. run new cables (full bathroom refurb to follow)
Put temporary covers over parts of window frames that were missing.
A bit of wall fell down, so we put it back up ''
Installed new kitchen
We have levelled the floor, carpeted, plastered and painted one of the rooms downstairs for the kids to use as a playroom...

the list goes on.

With a view to finishing downstairs last night we emptied a room to have a look at the floorboards, replace and treat where necessary, overboard if we must, then fit underlay and carpet.

Hubby notices damp patch on an external wall, just above a socket. Little bit of peeling paint scraped back reveals that this wall has been overboarded before....

WITH A SHEET OF METAL!!!!

needless to say carpet will be left rolled up for a while longer while we figure out what on earth we can do with this new problem :!:

So there we are...
Sorry to babble on but we've had a very busy 6 months!
