Hello all. Ive been living in my house now for almost four years. We first had carpet in our living room, but last year decided to go for laminated flooring. However over the few months the floor has become so uneven its unbelievable. In one section of it, its like a mountain thats how much its risen by. We now wish to have Carpet, because this will be alot warmer (at the moment our floor is freezing).

How would i go about preventing the rising damp from affecting the carpet when we get it?

Is there an easy solution? rather than digging down and laying damp proof membrane? i have been browsing screwfix website and come across alot of damp proof membranes, vapour barriers, moisture barriers, damp proof paint?

Would it be any good if i got a sheet of damp proof membrane and layed that before the underlay? then finally the carpet?

I would appreciate any comments/help, really stuck on this one.

Regards

Lee

The passage of any moisture through a carpet will be uninterrupted. So, as long as you have heating and ventilation then no probs.

The only other solution as i see it is to break up the floor and do a proper job, i.e. dig down 250mm+ and install insulation, concrete polythene, etc.

Ok thanks for that. wouldnt the carpet get wet though because of moisture rising? So will i be ok by putting polythene sheet on existing floor then underlay and carpet? thanks buddy

If you left the house unoccupied with no heating for a length of time then i would say the carpets would end up damp. Otherwise i can't foresee a problem.

Laying polythene will only lead to suffocating the floor and will end up causing damp problems and associated smells.

so just lay the underlay and carpet? hope it will be ok as mrs is choosing very very light colour carpet thanks again m8

you mean did i leave gaps between the walls and flooring? so it can breathe? yes, room size is: Length 7mtrs, Width 7Mtrs
