Hi all,

So just got a new freestanding electric cooker (came preconnected with h05vv -f cable ) and I was going to connect it myself to the wall plate

Now I was using a screwdriver tester, When the cooker switch is on only the red cable shows live(normal right) but while the cooker switch was off I tested the red and the black cable and the black is showing live with the red I'm no electrician here guys but Is something wrong here? should i get a pro to do the install?

Has this 'wallplate' been used before to your knowledge? Is it a brand new cooker? Can't see the pic very clearly but is there damage to the red insulation? Neon screwdriver testers are not very reliable for a number of reasons. You'd be better off getting a multi-meter (approx £10 Maplin or such-like) and test it again. And then, post back with the results!

A cooker switch is double pole. Meaning that both the live (red) and neutral (black) should be completely disconnected when the switch is in the off position. You need to get a professional electrician to look at this problem.

I assume you are using a "neon screwdriver" which can sometimes give misleading results. In any case this needs professional investigation.

This is perfectly possible/normal behaviour with a neon screwdriver. They are not very useful as test tools. If you hadn't used it you would have connected the cooker up and it would probably be working now. I don't know why people are making all the fuss, as they wouldn't be the ones getting the work it you did get professional help.

No fuss actually. If you read the original post the OP is obviously not very confident and actually asks "should I get a pro to do the install"

When someone asks that question and where there is reasonable doubt about the observed results then in my view it is reasonable to suggest that the OP go with the safer approach. I am reasonably sure that is not "fuss"

Better safe than sorry... but I managed to find another tester in the house and all is working my big brother had a good laugh when he saw me with the doggy neon tester
