Whilst on the subject (the virus, not the dog) is there any reason why a standard hand-held remote thermometer can't be used for pointing at persons forehead for the pupose of reading their temperture, or does it need to be a specialised medical item ?

Just been on the local news, a builders merchants in East Anglia sold their entire stock of 50 facemasks to a single customer (Chinese believe it or not) In the meantime what are the local tradesmen going to do for these (dust) masks until the shop can re-stock ?
I hope the local builders boycott this outlet in the future

No issue with that method to detect raised temp - will work quite well.
Especially as Flu has a significantly higher temp than normal.

However it is better to test temp at Ear drum as this provides a measurement closer to actual Core Body Temp (forehead could be hot becuase of hat or running).

For sars they were using IR cameras at airports to look for people with raised temps compared to others - and pulling them aside to take core temp measurement.

Issue this time is that it seems that people are able to infect others before flu symptoms (and raised temp) appears.
