Domestic Oil Element

Morning chaps, i have thought about taking the above element for a while now, as there is lot of these where i live.

I know nowt about oil fueled boilers whatsoever.

Any experiences, exams, ect. would be of good reading.

am in the middle of trying to do the same,most of the centres i have spoken too offer 4 days training and one days accessment this will give you oftec recognition costs around £500plus vat and £60 for the books.oil boilers are a lot simpler than modern gas boilers so dive in before oil goes the same way as gas with all the elements 16 in the beginning now over 100 cats and still rising

From what I hear, there are firms who have oftec registrations, but have decided to pack up doing oil. Something to do with increasing regulations. Not that any of this will matter in a few years when no one can afford heating of any sort, let alone oil.

FOUR DAYS TRAINING?!?!??? There's no need for that, you only have to look up answers in various books, it's not a real exam (bit like corgi really)

Thanks to all who gave there opinions, i will have to think hard about it.

Talk to the training fellow at Grants, I think they charge more like £400 and do it in about three days. He can tell you if they have any requirement for anyone to service their boilers on the island.

I would have thought that it would be worthwhile on the island but it all depends on how many OFTECs you have already have there. Maybe you can get an idea from the OFTEC site?

One advantage is that oil boilers are more demanding of regular servicing than gas boilers which go for years without any attention.

I once went to replace a worn thermostat on a Baxi wall mounted unit which had run for 17 years without any service or repair at all! It was actually in very good condition !

Thanks for that Tony. Just had a glance at the OFTEC site, according to that, theres only 2.

You see, the majority of the island is natural gas, but theres a hell of a lot of oil in the domestic side and LPG also, including caravan sites and what not.

The other thing is, a lot of guys that worked for the larger companys over here, have like myself gone it alone. I know we don't particully get paid what we should, but if you work over here, for lets say one of the main firms,, the hourly rate is crap, go to say pompy, and the wages climb straight away.

Think the problem here is, too many Corgi guys in such a small area.
