an award is very specific and can only ever apply to the person it pertains to the actual symbol given to symbolize the award it is not the actual award it is no more than a physical representation to say a specific person is worthy and we give a pointless physical emblem to display we value them and have given an award but with a token material symbol for display
if the token material symbol is not engraved then its off no real value other than a pointless door stop
if it is engraved it only ever has value and is valid to the person named
after all a veteran's medal is just a token to say the actual original person this was given to deserves this award with or without any pointless visual tokens being present
