Door handle spring faulty?

To lock my uPVC door you pull the handle up, then turn the key.

But lately, when I pull the handle up there is a metallic sound, like a spring. And it now takes me a few goes before I can successfully lock the door.

Obviously something in the lever mechanism is broken or on the verge of breaking.
Is this something I can repair myself?
And do I need new lock + handle?

I think a little more investigation maybe needed. Does not sound like a barrel lock fault. So could be the handle but these handles are linked to the locking mechanism up the side of the door.
