Hi i tried to find this exact fault but couldn't and just need some guidance on where to look.
Have a upvc front door with a standard pull up the door handle to lock and then turn the key.

The problem is if i left the handle and lock the door in the frame its fine and the key turns, but if i check the door by applying slight pressure to the handle downwards the key wont turn and i have to lift up again ever so slightly.

It does this if i try with the door open so don't think its catching on the frame. I changed the door handles today thinking maybe the springs are stretched but it still has the same issue.
Could it be it needs a new barrel?
Any help appreciated

Doesn't sound like anything is wrong, applying a but of downward pressure on the handle is obviously creating friction or putting some tension on the internal workings in the gearbox, that's clear because when you lift the handle the barrel clicks open, may I ask what are you checking for ?

I think its because my other half when she locks the door checks it by applying pressure and then when she returns the key wont turn and had to pull up handle again. It never used to do it and our other patio and rear door doesn't.
If its normal i wont mess anymore

It could be just a tiny bit of wear starting in the gearbox then, back in the 80s and 90s people used to ask for brass scroll type handles, these would play havoc after 10 years of being held horizontal by the spring in the handle and inside the gearbox but both would eventually start to sag and the handle would have lots of up and down play, the little helper spring cassettes you get in modern handles help keep the handle horizontal
