Door Opening in Load Bearing Wall

I want to move a door opening into my living room. The wall is loadbearing and I would like to know whether I would need to prop the wall prior to fitting the lintel. I'm not able to confirm the width of the door at the moment becuase i'm at work, but would guess it would be about 32".

Yes you will have to prop the wall before you fit the lintel.

it will depend upon the way in which the wall was built and the load above.

there have been many times when a doorway sized opening has been removed without propping and without any problems whatsoever.

that said, a standard door opening will need at least a 1.2m swathe of bricks removing as to accommodate the lintel.

you must judge each job independently. proximity to other openings and weaknesses with have a determining influence. sometimes it is easier to bash out the opening, insert the lintels and repair above. other times, such as when specific load carrying beams or joists are directly above the opening, then acros will be a wise choice.

Prop the ceiling joists, not the wall.
