doorhandle spring - 2 or 2.5 turns?

I plan on replacing the springs rather than the handle (which has 'gone' after just 3 or 4 years). The guide I'm reading says to determine the number of turns. How do I do that when the spring is obscured and the circlip pliers I need are part of the kit containing the new springs?

Would it matter if I used 2 instead of 2.5 turns (or vice versa)?

get a pair of circlip pliers and take it off
