Double glazing from 1991

Evening folks,

I have a few units that have blown and fogged up. From looking at the frame, it seems they are Profile 22 and we're manufacred in 1991.

Obviously, these are now quite old but as we're thinking about moving in the not too distant future I'm just wanting to replace the units.

Is there an easy way to tell the thickness I need without removing the unit? When looking online, it seems the glass itself can be 4mm, 6mm etc, then with the different size spacer bars. Does anyone know if there was a typical size back in 1991?

If you have a set of callipers you can measure the glass overall thickness by eg opening a window and clamping the callipers on the glass

Doesn't even have to be proper callipers, I bet you could make some out of two L shaped bits of cardboard that would be accurate enough to give you a read. You don't have to replace them like for like, just make the new thickness the same as the old.

If I was ordering new units in your situ I'd pop all the beads off, measure the size of it and pop the beads back in partially, to hold it while the new one arrived. This way you aren't redoing the entire bead pull operation when the new units arrive

Units manufactured so long ago will probably need new bubble gasket on the beads/frames as the stuff that's there will likely be proper hard/ruined by now. Also, be gentle with the beads; they won't respond as well to being battered in with a hammer now they're 30+ years old

Note that if you're just getting sample quotes, simply guess at sizes. If you're ordering for real, do expose the pane edges and measure it exactly. If you order panes that are the wrong size you'll have to bin them and order more

I had a few units replaced by a local window company. North Manchester.
Was quite similar price to ordering units online for DIY.

I've used 'visible distance' plus 25mm of width and height when ordering new panes ie 12.5mm all round. But yes, best to at least remove one to double check yours.

£145 for a patio windows 1M x 2M.
The other units replaced were specialised. Original 1930s glass encapsulated in a unit and a leaded top unit.

Worth getting a local firm out for a quote.

the spacer bars in double glazing are made in 2mm or 4mm increments, so 20mm, 22mm, 24mm, 28mm

most double glazing is done with 4mm glass

I think your profile 22 is likely to be 24mm units - but could be any size

I think prices will be significantly more than that now as that was pre energy crisis and high inflation

glass manufacture is very heavy on enrgy

Glass prices are through the roof at the moment, at the minute I'm charging £250 for a 1m x 1m clear float unit fitted

Thanks folks, some good advice and tips.

My windows are internally beaded can anyone suggest the best way I might get these off? I've seen some use an old chisel, some a stiff blade scraper etc etc.

Also, in terms of replacement. What should I ideally be looking at, a local glazing manufacturer, online sellers, something/someone else?
