down lights and fire hoods

from wot i have been told and due to the regs "spot lights" now have to have a typeof cover over them to protect them from going on fire..

is this correct and is this official in yet

any guide on this topic would be great

mini2,yes it is correct that fire and sound resistant hoods are needed in cetain circumstances.

but its not to stop them going on fire its to maintain the fire resistance of the element your fitting them to/in.

this is the case in england - the same principle, i would imagine, applies in ireland that the fire resistance must be maintained
 
so does it mean the older style spot lights you cannot install them in ENGLAND no more????

no - you just need to use the appropriate hoods

its not a new thing but it has become more widespread with more and more people wanting downlights

not entirely

the hoods dont protect the light - they protect the hole you make to put the light in.

as nstreet points out a few downlights have been developed that have the necessary protection built into the unit but the should have independant certification
