Very basic question (and perhaps silly), we want to put downlights/spotlights into our newly renovated bathroom, but do we install the spotlights then get someone into skim or get it skimmed then install the lights?

Skim it first, then fit the lights. If you fit the lights first, you will have to remove them for the plasterer anyway and then retrim the holes that will have been partially filled by the skim.

I'd make the holes for the down lighters before the skim.

That way if you make any mistakes the plasterer can deal with them as part of the skim and you run a much smaller risk of damaging the new skim when you fit the lights as all you will have to do is chip off the excess skim around the holes.

I suppoe from teh answers you can do it eaither way, but from a plastering point of view it is better to cut the holes after so

- you don't have dried bits of plaster dragging off the cut edge of the oles when trowelling up

- you don't have a bit of plaster falling to floor as you push a trowel full across a hole

- you can trowel up with smoother action..

But either way is fine
