downlights - loft boards

I want to put some downlights in a bedroom but the loft above is boarded with T&G boards. This would be a pain to remove!
How do you deal with this situation? Can I poke the cables through the floorboards and run along the surface in conduit or something similar?

The loft is rarely used.

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and take up some of the boards to get proper access. A few minutes careful work with a circular saw or a multi tool and you're in. A few screws to pop it back. Its only a loft......
