I recently moved into a new flat and there's a horrible drain smell in the bathroom.

The smell seems to be coming from the basin (if I remove the trap the smell gets a lot stronger, or if I leave the plug in the basin with some water in, the smell isn't as strong) so looking for ideas to remedy this.

    Here's the trap:

I can't see or feel any leaks and the trap seems to have water in when removed.

    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Clean out the overflow.

I've done so with a foam cleaning product, but it doesn't seem to have helped

Use toilet bleach squirted into the overflow and then run the hot tap.

OK, doing that now. Lots of bubbles coming out of overflow. You think that's all it is?

Wouldn't be surprised if there a load of crud that's built up in that flexi section of waste. For what's involved, I'd remove it and replace with rigid pipework.

I cleaned everything thoroughly when I moved in to try and get rid of the smell, so although there was a lot of crud in there, it's been cleaned but the smell still remains

As a professional walking into your bathroom I would say Gor blimey it don't half pen + ink ? Then ask a few questions ? Which would culminate in a suggestion to "dip " the trap to ascertain the depth of water seal, as I perceive that the trap seal may be drawn out (rather like this post ?) You may have as a dipstick, one of those coffee stirrers, found @ gas stations by the vending machine ?

  11. I assume you've checked that there's a water seal in the bath. Do you get a gurgling sound from the bath or the basin when the toilet gets flushed, or a gurgle from the basin when the bath drains.

Thread hijack... I get the latter. What's the cause? Ta.

  13. The water emptying from a bath, can pull the water out of the basin trap, so the gurgling sound is the water being pulled out, then air gets in and the water drops back, and so on. If all the water gets pulled out, then the sewer smells come up through the basin. The basin doesn't tend to have such an affect on the bath, because the amount of water isn't so great.

But in the summer, I use the shower more than the bath, and so the bath seal evapourates, so as soon as I get a sewer smell in the bathroom, I run the bath taps and remake the seal.

Can you discern that smell and fresh poo - if someone's been in there - you could waste a lot of water;)

  17. Only me in the whole place. Actually, I used to get a few ghosts from the graveyard in the church behind me, but they don't bother me any more.
