Drawings software??

In the past when I've had to make changes to the proposed drawings I've just done them by hand, ran them by the building inspector, then resubmitted them, not the most professional looking but got the stamp,
Got some proposed to make changes to now, but would like to do them on the computer for a more professional look, can anyone recommend a free or cheaply priced software

I have played with Sketch-up.
Works quite well.

I recently "found out" that you can import a drawing from a PDF or whatever and tell the programme what size point A to B is. Then draw over all other lines and it does the maths for you. Maybe that's common but I was playing with a roof detail plan that I wanted to convert to 3D.
