I'm in the market for a bench drill press, looking to spend £80- £100 for hobby/DIY use, fairly undemanding.
I'm amazed that all the makes I've found in this price range have a spindle travel of 50mm, a miserable 2".
Have I misunderstood? Am I right in thinking that I won't be able to drill to a greater depth than 2" if I buy one of these? Or is there a trick or two adjusting table height etc. which increases this?

Provided what you are drilling, is firmly clamped to the table, you can drill as far as the drill will go, then stop the drill, move the table up the column, till drill bit is almost at bottom of the hole, then restart the drill and continue.
Personally I would look round for a good second hand quality drilling machine of a better spec. Startrite / Meddings or similar.
