Hi all

Thanks for letting me join your forum and hope you experts can help solve my problem.

I have been given an old cast iron or mild steel (not sure which cast or mild but very heavy) public house table. It has a shelf about a third of the way up from the base which serves to brace the table and which also has a 25mm hole to accommodate a garden umbrella. The umbrella I have has a 32mm shaft and so to utilise it I need to enlarge the hole. I had thought to use a cone cutter but reading the spec. on these they seem to be aimed at thin materials and the shelf on the table must be best part of 6mm.

If anyone can recommend a suitable cutter/drill they would earn my undying gratitude.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ken.

How thick is the table top, Ken?
You could get away by chain drilling 3mm holes out to the correct diameter, then finishing off with a half round file.
You'd need quality HSS drill bits plus plenty of lube to help things along.
John :)
Sorry - just seen its 6mm thick

The other way to do it is get a 25mm shaft to go through the hole and cut down the one coming from the umbrella, and attach them together

Thanks both.

I have tried the 3mm solution before and have to say my DIY skills are not good. The end result was not pretty. I think the same may be applied to 25mm shaft extension.

I am still tempted to get a cone a cutter and give it a go.

Thanks again.

Regards Ken.
