I recently had to drill into a ceramic tile floor to fix my WC in position. I used a tile drill bit and the job was a success, but I was amazed at how hot they got - like glowing at the point - should I have drilled slowly and lubricated it or is the glowing drill bit par for the course?

the bit designs vary, but most if not all dont actually drill they grind through the tile. So if you drill at high speed it is not unreasonable to see a glowing bit.
my preference is slow -medium speed with moderate pressure, if you lean too hard the drill can lurch forward as you pass through the tile and the chuck an crack the surface of the tile.
