Hi, I am looking to drill into one of our 1st floor ceilings in order to install a bracket to hold a punch bag..

To be honest I would have normally just gone ahead with it and may or may not have regretted it later but my girlfriend is insisting that I get some sort of professional opinion before I do it...

Can you generally drill into ceilings and is it likely to be able to take the weight? Its only a junior size 2ft bag so not really going to causing much pull.

Is there anything I should check out first? Cables etc?

Any information or advise would be much appreciated

Thanks

I suggest you get one of

or perhaps 2 one for you one for the GF

You will need to fix the bracket into a joist, not just the ceiling (unless that is you buy the hats)

Find the timbers in the ceiling by either looking for joints in plasterboard for lines, cracks, nails etc, banging with side of fist! or buying crappy electric gadget from DIY place. when you think you have found one (presuming its near to where you wish to fit punch bag) make some holes in ceiling (take care not to hit a cable or pipe) with bradel or small drill. I suggest a row of holes to locate exact width of timber (should be about 50mm). Now drill pilot hole in centre to take ceiling fixing.
