drilling tap hole in stainless sink

hi, Ive got a smallish ikea stainless steel sink with no tap hole. Ive watched a couple of vids recommending a step bit and wd40 to lubricate it.

Do I need to mount the sink in the worktop first to support it ?
im just thinking that the worktop will be thin at the back once cut out for the sink and Ill probably be putting a lot of pressure on it ?

also does the bit need to be titanium coated or would something like this be better ?
