Dripping Stop Cock

My main stop cock is leaking from the spindle. Can I undo the nut at the base of the handle and wrap it in PTFE without turning off the water main outside?

try tightning the nut at the top of the spindle a bit...might just do the trick...not too much or u wont turn the handle !
