Hi all, new to this site very informative

I am new to woodturning and would like to have a go at some drumsticks, does anyone know where i can find a simple plan

Many thanks

One problem with turning your own drumsticks: they generally break during enthusiastic playing. Whilst this may be why you want to make them, to save money, won't you be sad when all your hard work is obliterated by a particularly enthusiastic rimshot?

But if you do want to do this, you could start by copying your current favourite brand of stick and make improvements to the design that suit you. I have never used a wood-lathe, but the old metalworking lathe I used would allow you to insert a template in order to "copy" the design (basically a pin that would trace the design, and was connected to the cutting head thus preventing it going below the level of the template at that distance along the workpiece). I would imagine at least some wood lathes will have this facility.

Good luck

Oh another thing, I am not a drummer, but when I have dabbled with a pair of Vic Firths they felt like they were made of hardwood (looked like maple, that nice light colour), so this is something to take into consideration. Softwood might be too bendy... could be great for practice sticks though, quieter.

adam you forgot the welcome

heeeelllooo uk tony and welcome
as adam says you will need a close grain wood for better results

If I were making some, I'd use Cozy Powell's sticks as a model/template; i.e. you keep more wood than you remove.

Cozy described them as "rather heavy"

The magazine interviewer said; "I saw a pair. 'Thin trees' would be a better description........"

Maybe get a pair from your local music shop (or E-Bay) and trace...?
I don't know off-hand what brand he did use, though.....

Regards, Graham

Drumsticks are most usually made of hickory, but then I'm no drummer either, I just seem to remember this hitherto usless fact (?) Rimshot :?: I thought that was the preserve of specialist websites, but I wouldn't know about that either. Anyhow, welcome to the site and good luck :D
