Hi, we have bought the DVD game of the old quiz show bullseye, (sadly Jim Bowen is not doing voice over ;) )

The problem is, we get 2 or 3 minutes into it and for no reason the DVD freezes.

The DVD player becomes totally unusable, the only way to unfreeze it is to turn off the power to the DVD player which obviously loses everything.

This is our 3rd DVD player and every DVD game we have ever tried freezes at some point

What is the problem with these things ?

When your not using it, turn it off, not standby but off, that might not fix it but it worked for us, I don't know why, but they don't like being left on for extended periods.
good luck

Will try turning the DVD player off when not in use, plays film DVD's ok though.

As for scratched disks, i thought that at first however the latest one is brand new with no scratch's at all

Eh? Is this is a DVD player or a computer with a DVD drive in it?

Its a DVD player, the make is Ingersoll.

I'm thinking of buying a DVD recorder/video combo, brand name unit in the hope that it will work ok.

We don't use DVD interactive games that much, but they can be fun at christmas etc, however if the whole thing freezes at some point and it has to be started again it gets to be a bit of a pain.

Isn't that the company that specialises in timepieces?

They may well do, however they obviously make DVD players as well, bought from Currys 6-8 months ago. Ingersoll D2000 if that helps

Update.

We never did get the thing to play DVD games such a Millionaire.

However, i have now bought a Liteon DVD player/recorder. Everything works great, inc the DVD games.

The moral is, cheap DVD players.....don't bother wasting your cash ;)

On the contrary, I bought a Liteon DVD recorder last year and have had nothing but trouble with it, culminating with me opening the case and replacing the DVD-R with a different one.
The hard drive and DVDR are standard PC components, there is a simple tuner and power supply inside the case. Not much for the £250 paid for the unit.

I get your point, however i still think it is impossible for the cheap units to be as good long term, as the more expensive ones.

Asda are now selling a dvd player for less money than a dvd disc.

Can anyone honestly say that is going to be a top quality, trouble free unit ? ;)

As with many things, just because "I have one of those and its cr*p"or "I have one and its brilliant" actually doesnt mean a right lot.
Half of the time people post on boards like this and give their opinion on something they know nothing about, they had one, ONE out of the millions in production and it was brilliant - although similar items from other manufactureres they havnt even layed eyes on, let alone used. Ok the item MIGHT do fancy and wonderful things, but does it compare to the brand name? doubtful.
Example, go down to netto and buy one of their cordless drills or saws for £25, now if you've never owned such a tool, or owned only one of the prehistoric type this indeed, WOW thats brilliant. Then you go and try a dewalt....
I have a £25 asda special DVD player, my combi broke and I'm deciding if I should go for a hdd recorder or not. It plays dvd's.
Oh and it takes 1/2 an hour (give or take) for the dvd to load, the sound quality makes me want to throw out my hifi (definately not cheapo) and plug into a pair of biscuit tins. Cant comment on the actual video quality as I dont have a fancy new tv yet. If it breaks before I get a proper one it will go in the bin which will be cheaper and less hassle than taking it back.
When I get my new one, I expect the dvd's to loads pretty instantly, I expect to have the sound output from it of decent enough quality for me not to go and throw my £1000 yammy amp in the bin in disgust, and i expect it to last.
Liteon optical drives are usually ok, nothing special, nothing particularly bad (IME) with them, but lik emost, read the spec, oh wow 56x read, yeh right, read the small print then compare it to a plextor 48x. If you want quality then you need to pay (usually - there ARE bargains to be had, just too many cashing in on crap by using clever marketing and overseas call centres)
however i still think it is impossible for the cheap units to be as good long term, as the more expensive ones.
agreed
Thats why its a statement to drive round in a ford Ka (oops, did I mean BMW or Mercedes)

Good comment eggplant, this post has gone off topic a bit but hey thats life.

One thing is for certain in my opinion, manufacture's no longer build items with a long usable life in mind.

It is clearly more profitable for a unit to die within a few years of purchase and therefore require the purchase of a new unit, than to manufacture a unit which lasts for many trouble free years.

Sad to say but manufacturing/quality/long working life no longer go together.

Yep, thats quite true in many cases, buy it, use it, chuck it! As the saying goes "they dont make em like they used to"

All very true eggplant.

Strange though in a time when we are all been told, nay ordered in some cases, to re-cycle/look after the environment etc, that manufacture's are allowed to fuel the throw away generation.
