Dwarf sunflowers

Hi, I bought a couple of dwarf sunflowers from a carboot sale about 6 weeks ago and planted them in a sunny position, But they soon went brown and died off, I don't know if they are annuals or perinuals and if they are perinuals are they ok and do they need cutting down to ground level. Any info would be of great help thanks.

Sunflowers are annuals so need sowing each spring.
They may have died off from lack of water in the recent hot spell before the roots were deep enough to take water up from the soil.
