We have a house which has been rented out for nearly 3 years. During this time we've had E-ons central heating plan, costing £16 per month. At the start of the plan then sent an engineer to check the boiler was ok, which it was.

Last week our letting agent rang us to let us know the boiler has stopped working. I rang E-on and they arranged to visit the property and have a look at the boiler. Their engineer said the boiler was beyond repair and he issued a safety warning!

I then asked a plumber to visit to house and provide a quote for a new boiler. I got a phonecall last night from him saying the boiler should be fixed by E-on, and the faults they found are stupid.

Here are the faults:

1) Non regulation pipework fitted to boiler
2) Unknown wiring at the top of the boiler
3) Chip in flue pipe

Now, both 1 and 2 are absolute rubbish. Apparently the pipework he was referring to was standard when the boiler was fitted. The regulations changed after it was installed. The unknown wiring is for lighting and isn't on the boiler, it's above the cupboard the boiler is in. There is a chip in the flue, but the plumber said that's the only thing they should be charging for.

IF all the above issues were a problem, why didn't the original engineer pick on on them 3 years ago when he did the inspection? Are all E-on engineers different, and are they not all trained correctly.

I am really annoyed about this because I've spent over £500 on this boiler care with e-on, but they are failing to deliver the service. I'm also concerned because we have a tenant without heating and hot water.

I need to phone e-on again to get them back to the property, but not sure of the best way to deal with it. Any ideas on how to make them provide the service I paid for?

Many Thanks

You dont seem to realise that you are buying a no frills service and they will do their best to find ways to get out of repairing an old system.

You would be far better off with an independent!

Unfortunately you have not bothered to tell us your boiler model or what the actual fault is. We cannot make any value judgement.

Why did the 'plumber' not fix the fault for you while he was there?

Its always better to call a boiler engineer than a general plumber.

Sorry, he is a boiler engineer.

The exact model of the boiler I'm not sure of, but the make is Vailant

The fault is there's no hot water and heating. The boiler engineer said the problem is likely the heat exchanger. He didn't fix the problem as he said E-on should have done this.

It may be a no frills care plan, but they shouldn't make up faults to get out of repairing it.

Most heat exchanger faults are due to dirt and not covered by the insurance cover.

I doubt it is anything as simple as that anyway if it suddenly stopped working.

Most Vaillant boilers are still repairable although many engineers dont like dealing with the older ones. I dont either because the owners just want the boiler to be made to work at the minimum cost rather than deal with all the issues.

Boiler installers are usually not very experienced at repairs.

I think your best bet is to get on the phone and cause an almighty stink, what you want to do is get the independent to write up a report for you and pehaps do the repair too

Once the fault has been located and repaired threaten them with court action I am sure they will want to cover your bill quickly

Let this be lesson to all, these policies are not exactly what they have been lead to believe, they take your money when the goings good but there are always excuses for not doing a repair, the most common one is this system is dirty and requires a powerflush and the second favourite is scale

That old chesnut gets dragged out every single time and obviously for every powerflush magnaclean ,or any other accessories the repair guy from these companies will recieve a bonus ranging from £20 to hundreds depending on how good he is at blagging it

Everyone wants to trust the supposed engineer in their house and these large companies have found this work to their advantage because they no longer need slick salesman for the hardsell

Good luck and make sure to cause them hell
