newbie wannabe domestic spark.

i have enroled on this course 5 day course in january and have a 5 day intro to elecs course prior to this..

as the total outlay is £1100 i am a little worried that i wont pass.. is there any thing i should be reading doing prior to attending.. i am pretty hands on and not stupid in electrical matters but have no real official experience so just a little concerned..

any ideas/thorts would be most appreciated...anything i should be reading up on?

ps i do have a copy of the BS 7671 16th to hand.. is this any benefit.?

:?:

Get in touch with course provider and ask their advice, there must be some prerequisites for attending courses

There loads of books out there but without knowing what knowledge you have then it's difficult to advise.

TA.. spoke with course they recommend "guide to building regs" and "on site guide"

i have very little knowledge but am no muppet. and this is what i am doing

Best of luck, I do have some reservations on these "crash" courses.

I am from an education background, and I know that time spent learning is better to a quick fly through.

I am doing Level 3 this year after completeing level 2 last year.

I have a degree in maths so the science and theory is not a problem, but I really value the practical time we spend.

4 years in 2 is quick, but I would not feel happy working within the domestic environment leaving people with my installations after only a 5 day course.

Any way enjoy it, best of luck and keep us posted how you get on :D

There loads of good books out there that will help with the courses your enroling in.
The 4 main ones i have and find invaluable are all IEE`s books....
1.On site guide (small brown and white book)
2.Electricians guide to building regs (lime green book)
3.BS7671 (the big brown bible 16th edition)
4.Guidance note 3 inspection & testing (yellow book)
*remember though that next year 17th edition comes to power and depending when your taking your course it might be worth waiting as this book is around £40 a pop.(try ebay for a used one?)

I since found the range of books from NICEIC are very easy to understand BUT these are only NICEIC`s guides and their ways of thinking may not be shared by others.
5.Domestic elec installation guide (search amazon.co.uk )
6.Inspecting testing and certification (as above)
7.Snags & solutions part 1 earthing and bonding (as above)

Brian Scaddon publishes a good range of basic books but, personally, i find his calculations a bit messed up but his explanations of the basics are easy to follow.

Think i still have some old test papers in the attic with the kind of questions you`ll be expected to answer so if you mail me ill scan and send you what i have.

assume i dont have to read BS7671 front to back (300 pages) and memorise it do i? i am really worried about course.. do all the books have to be committed to memory?

These 5 day wonder courses are not rocket science - allowing for example 2 minutes per multiple choice question so you can finish the exam pretty quickly if you know anything about what you are doing.

Pre read and understand the Electricians Guide to B Regs & OSG. BS7671 not really covered on the 5 day wonder course; neither is the GN3 inspect & test. Both should be in my opinion but thats another very long story.

If you know the green and the brown book thoroughly and have half a brain you should sail through the exams. 2381 as well - much the same level. 2391 is a far better exam - some searching questions and real working out - hence a low pass rate - about 30% I believe.

where you say thoroughly we are talking a couple of chunky documents here.. are we saying knowing it word for word here?.. basically my course is in Jan.. I have the OSG and am getting the Electricians Guide to B regs tomorrow. I have little knowledge about the field so will reading through bits and bobs for the next 8 weeks put me in good stead? sorry for the long post...
