My gas pipe is black iron.

In the garage it has some surface rust. Today I have been applying preservative primer and will paint it tomorrow. I am not putting anything on the earth clamp area.

I thought I would take the clamp off and give that part of the pipe a wire-brushing to brighten it up for a good contact, then perhaps prevent future rust with oil or petroleum jelly as is used on car batteries.

What's a good approach?

isn't it "copper grease" that they use on car battery terminals? Thought something conductive would be a good start.
