Earth wire thickness...

Hi all.

Is the earth wire in 2.5mm mains cable to back box the same thickness as that in 1.5mm (or indeed 1.0mm) lighting cable.

Just ensuring that all sockets are earthed from socket to metal back boxes and have lots of 1.5mm cable from which can strip out the earth wire...but is it the same thickness? It's so hard to tell.

No.
2.5mm² T&E has 1.5mm² CPC(earth wire),
1.5mm² and 1.0mm² have 1.0mm² CPC

As long as the socket or switch is earthed, you do not actually need to earth the back box, but it is a good idea, so either size would do anyway.
