Last night I replaced a couple of standard 2G white plastic sockets with metal ones. I put the ring earths into the earth connector on the socket and also added another earth (sleeved) cable between the 2nd earth terminal on the socket and the earth terminal in the back box. I have just realised I have used an earth wire from 1.5mm T&W, not 2.5mm. Do I need to change this for 2.5mm?

Thanks

I'm no electrician but more to the point, is the front plate of this new metal socket earthed?

I.E. does the earth terminal on it also connect to the plate?

For piece of mind & safety sake you may be better off changing the earth wire that you have fitted, it should only take a few minutes.

Don't get ya there. Socket is earthed by means of the rings earth if that's what you mean. It's the additional 'jumper'earth between the socket and the back box I am querying.

On a metal plate socket the plate is automatically earthed when u connect the earths from the ring to the earth terminals.

The additional earth wire to the back box is fine at 1.5mm - 1.5mm is what the earth in a 2.5mm twin & earth is!

The back box should be earthed via the mounting screws - even with placcy sockets.
The CPC in a piece of 1.5mm lighting wire is 1mm, there is a slight issue with a 1mm cable if it is protected by a 30A rewirable fuse, however as it is already earthed via the screws I wouldn't loose sleep.

So long as the back box has at least one fixed lug then it does not need a flyer, although a lot of sparks fit them as standard.
