had the op checked the flyleads aren't inside the cu?

Should the 12v transformer be installed outside though? I thought these usually have 'indoor use only' written on them.

Londonboy - nope had the covers off the CUs to look, no flyleads. looked at the transformer labels, they are specialist garden lighting transformers suitable for outside use, so that looks ok.

All in all it looks a bit slap dash.

Holmslaw - I'd agree, but how unsafe are we talking exactly? It is all 30mA RCD protected afterall, while that's not a coverall i realise, it must reduce the overall risk

i'm not trying to avoid getting it sorted but back to my original question - ok we've confirmed that the conduit boxes are not earthed, and the SWA is at best earthed at one end on the run to the socket, and not at all on the SWA on the lighting circuit, and he seems to have used the wrong type of connectors on the external joints - but is earthing this lot on a PME supply better or worse than the current situation?

Looking again, that would seem to be the switched live coming back up from the light switches.

Bit wet under the plastic cover, but i guess that's not what's providing the waterproofing.

So...

Sounds like I need to get both ends of SWA earthed, by connecting a earth lead (4mm2?) from the CPC at both CUs to the banjo. I also need to get the earth continuous at the plastic box, again with flyleads.

At the conduit boxes - does the armour connection provide the earth, or are these also supposed to be earthed as well via a cable connecting from a banjo connector, I assume not as i can't really see how this would fit?

What tests should I make sure my new sparks does after rectifying the above - earth continuity from the furthest galvanised box??

There is no regulation which prohibits SWA from being earthed at one end only, otherwise you would have posted what it is by now.

So a SWA earthed at one end only complies with BS7671.

Of course you only earth T&E at one end.

How exactly would you earth it at both ends?

I often earth one end only of the SWA if i am running a sub main which is going to be put on a TT earthing system. Has always passed inspections.
