Hi, I have 3 individual recessed spotlights, mains, GU10 type. They have a chrome fitting which the bulb pushes through and into the ceiling cavity.

The mini junction box on these has a L + N but no earth terminal and there is no earthing point on the metal fitting. The instructions make no mention of earthing them yet the guy in the shop says they must be!

Do I need to earth these?

Thanks

Have a look for the double insulated symbol, its a picture of two concentric squares:

If it has such a symbol then it does not require an earth (terminate in in a piece of choc block incase you ever need it for a different light) and you should not attempt to fit one,

if it lacks such a symbol and does not have a point to connect the earth, then you should check for a standards mark, it is unlikely a piece of equipment like this would get standards approval (mistakes do happen though), and you should take it back under the SOGA as its clearly not fit for purpose

I've never met a GU10 fitting that requires an earth. What sort of shop did you buy them from, and how qualified was the guy who advised you about the fitting requiring an earth?

They came from B&Q so they should be to British Safety Standards, the guy was you fairly typical B&Q employee, fairly helpful but certainly no expert.

It's OK, I checked the instructions and there it was, the square in a square double earth logo, so no earthing required.

Thanks for the help....
