the battery is inside the control panel. There is a battery switch behind a rubber plug on the back. Check the instructions. IIRC the power indicator changes from green to yellow when it fails to battery.
A keypad downstairs is better than a blipper because you have a PIN and you can change it e.g. if you have builders in. The keypad is small. Put it out of sight but in easy reach, e.g. on the back of a cupboard door.
