Hi, could someone please answer the following; when a rewire is done is it now part of the job to have it logged in to a central data base and what does this cost please, I'm getting quotes to have a house rewired and I don't know if someone is trying to pull the wool over my eyes, many thanks.

There is no such database of which I am aware. This could have been a reference to the fact that a job such as a rewire has to be 'notified' to the Building Control department of the local authority in question. If the electrician is a member of a 'self-certifying' scheme, this costs only a few pounds. If the person undertaking the work is not a member of such a scheme, it can cost a few hundred pounds (typically £200-£400).

Kind Regards, John

Did you try Sean Steele pred? I can vouch for him. He's 100% sound.

When rewires are to be done there is a requirement to notify building controls of the work. This is normally done in two ways:
*Registered domestic scheme installer, that can self certify work and notify on completion.
The cost of a self cert to notify would be in the region of £1.50-£3.00, but as the self cert electrician has incurred costs of registration and the additional required insurances, this would be factored in to the overall costs.
*Unregistered electrician, that will have to notify work prior to starting work and have the application accepted. This would typically follow up with site visits by the BC inspectors.
As they can not self cert, the notification fee is usually quite high and will vary from region to region. In my area the last fee I was aware of was £240 plus VAT.
You would still require an electrical installation certificate, that would normally be produced by the electrician installing.

There are number of sites were you can check if the electrician is a scheme member.
