I am looking to buy an electrical tester to test the condition of my electrics. Can anyone recommend a good one. I already have a screwdriver with a light in it but this is next to useless, and don't mind investing in a really good tester.

I use an analogue megger. This battery powered instrument puts out 500V at 1Mohm load and will test both continuity and insulation. Cost probably over £100. Several brands all do the same job.
I recently purchased a tiny loop tester from Martindale. It conducts below 30mA so does not trip RCDs. It checks earth loops with LED display and indicates socket faults. Cost about £65. I know it is not a proper loop tester but saves bridging out RCDs.
