Electricity usage was 6kwh now 46kwh per day

And you are sure you only have one phase out from the meter?

Is there current flowing into the meter?

yes definitely only one phase out of the meter. also reading 0a on the supply to the meter. in fact, every tail has 0a on it with the main switch off.

no, i only have one clamp meter.

id lean towards trusting the clamp meter as its logical for it to show 0a when the switch is off

I agree, but it is not logical to have a meter running with no current flowing in or out?

That means, when you eventually contact your supplier and they change the meter, the old one will be still spinning going down the road in the back of the van?

remind me, what does the clamp meter show on the tails going INTO and out of the electricity meter, when your CU is turned (a) on (b) off?

You really don't want to look in that CU, do you?

No, he doesn't, because he has put/built a cupboard over it which prevents him from removing the cover.

I would want to see inside that CU just to make sure everything is OK.

Peace of mind, no?

...only if there is a 230V AC supply in the back of the van to power it :-)

I have to say that, if one takes everything we've been told at face value, a misbehaving meter would still seem to be the most likely explanation. However, I would think that such behaviour of a meter would be very unusual, so I remain sceptical as to whether we can/should 'take everything we've been told at face value'!

Kind Regards, John

a) between 1.5 and 4a
b) 0a

no, because I know its wired up right, and I dont want to take a kitchen cupboard down when its going to be a a few weeks before the meter would be changed

i do appreciate your help greatly, but i dont understand what you are expecting to see in the CU

I don't know. Hopefully a normal CU with proper connections and all will be well, but who knows. There could be melted wires or devices, or there could be things connected to the wrong place, or a dead rodent or who knows what.

It is just that you have a very unusual fault, and we want to make sure it really is a faulty meter and not an installation fault.

In all my years in this game, I have never seen or heard of a meter just suddenly going faulty as yours appears to have done, and it seems like no one else on here has either which is why we want to make sure we can definately rule out any fault on your installation before you call out the meter company who will charge you if it is not a fault with their equipment.

well, ill be sure to put a pic up when the cover is off.

id like a proper CT that connects to the PC to monitor it without one of those daft energy monitors but cant seem to find what i want anywhere

when i fitted it, i did check that everything was tight a month later and again after that and then the cupboards went up around it again.

i did find pictures of my version of a henley octopus though

To get a proper accurate reading you'll need bath a CT and something to measure voltage.

You're going to have to pay a lot of money for a proper PC based electricity monitor. These are only normally used on large commercial installations.

The cheap way to double check is to install a private meter in line with the MOPs meter and see if they both increase at the same rate, but you would need an electrician to install this for you.
